Joining materials with liquid or solid adhesives has some distinct advantages over other mechanical joining (eg welding, brazing, bolting, etc.).

 

These advantages can be briefly summarized as follows:

 

• Materials with different properties can be joined effectively with adhesives. For example; aluminum-paper, iron-wood, cloth-paper etc.
• Thin films, fibers and small particles that cannot be joined in any other way can be easily joined with adhesives. For example; glass wool, sandpapers, brake pads, wood chips, etc.
• With adhesives, stronger, lighter and more effective bonding can be achieved than other joints. Thus, it may be possible to distribute the forces over a wide area, and fractures caused by material weakening can be reduced. For example; bonded floors, composite boards, etc.
• The glue line can be used to provide electrical, thermal or water/moisture insulation in some cases.
• Strength/weight ratios and dimensional stability of materials with different properties can be improved by crosslinking. For example, wood composite products such as water-resistant plywood, particleboard, fiberboard can be combined with thermo-setting adhesives.

 

Apart from the features that are explained briefly here, glued joints can have many advantages in general or special areas of use. As a result, cheap, safe and durable joints can be made for different materials with adhesives.
